World News – Former 'Amazing Race' producer Jeff Rice found dead …

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com staff

An American television?producer?has been found dead in mysterious circumstances while working in Uganda, his brother-in-law told msnbc.com on Wednesday.

Paul Blackman said that family members had heard that poisoning was suspected in the death of father of two Jeff Rice, 39, who is originally from Oklahoma.

Blackman, who is the brother of Rice’s wife Sally, added that the situation was unclear and?relatives were trying to establish what exactly had happened

Rice, who previously worked for?shows including?”The Amazing Race” and Animal Planet’s “Whale Wars,”?died on Friday night.?

Rice’s assistant, who Blackman declined to name, also became ill and was taken to a hospital in Uganda.

“We’ve sent people up there to get some answers,” Blackman told msnbc.com by phone from Durban, South Africa. “Nothing is finalized yet.

Addressing media reports that Rice had been fatally poisoned, Blackman said:?”I don’t know where they are getting this ‘definitely poisoned’ thing.”

Rice?moved to South Africa about 13 years ago and?holds dual citizenship, Blackman said. His wife is South African.

Rice’s death was first reported by FoxNews.com.

‘Really tough to handle’
Blackman said Wednesday morning that he was looking after their children, girls aged seven and two,?while Sally Blackman tried to get information from the South African police.

He said?his sister was finding the?uncertainty “really tough to handle, but, yeah, she’s strong.”

“There’s so much stuff in the air about possible poisoning, all that kind of stuff,” Blackman said. “At the moment, we’re trying to get Jeff’s body out of there to get some answers.”

Blackman said Rice had been “a historian, tour guide kind of person” in the United States and?had started?to work?in television about three years ago. He and his wife ran SB Productions in Durban.

He added his brother-in-law was working on?either a future show or documentary in Uganda.

“He was a fantastic producer apparently, a very, very sought-after producer,” he said. “The messages (of condolence) coming in have been very, very good actually. It’s been fantastic, he’s a very well-liked character. He was a good guy, very relaxed and just a very good guy.”

The “about us” section of SB Productions’ website says Rice decided there were “better ways to spend his time” after five years “contributing to the stalemate of the 405 in LA.”

“From pie in the sky to looking no futher than his nose, his mind is always churning. If Jeff isn’t crunching budgets or breaking down scripts, he can probably be found in some unusual African location with his Power Book and a bottle of the local brew. Jeff has an incredibly calm nature and a wicked sense of humor,” it adds.

Is Alec Baldwin hinting at the end of ’30 Rock’?

Alec Baldwin shows off his SAG Award on Sunday, Jan. 29.

By Susan C. Young, TODAY.com contributor

After Alec Baldwin gleefully picked up his sixth straight Screen Actors Guild Award for his role as “30 Rock” boss Jack Donaghy on Sunday,?he was already busy pitching himself to another sitcom.

According to the LA Times blog, Baldwin told fellow nominees Ty Burrell and Eric Stonstreet of “Modern Family,” “You know my show is almost over … I’m actually pitching myself to you guys.”

But is his show almost over?

Last fall NBC negotiated a two-year contract for him that would keep him on the show this season and next?– if the sitcom continues.

(FYI, TODAY.com is powered by msnbc.com, which is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

The 2011 season finished with “30 Rock” almost even in the ratings with the now-canceled “Outsourced,” and this season has not seen a dramatic jump in viewers for the sitcom. Indeed, NBC head of entertainment, Robert Greenblatt, inherited a shaky house when he took over the reins about a year ago, and he knows he needs to shape up the schedule to try to?improve the network’s ratings.

But could nuking “30 Rock” early be part of that restructuring?

Greenblatt told TODAY.com he hasn’t decided yet if he even wants the comedy on his schedule. “I’ll decide by the May upfront,” he told us.

It’s possible the show — which has so far survived thanks to its numerous awards and critical praise — may not have the needed viewers to stay on the schedule for the full renewal.

One thing’s for sure: Greenblatt seems to have a?limited tolerance for low performers. When asked why he opted to chop “Chuck” and burn off the episodes quickly, including last Friday’s double-header finale, he told us, “Have you seen the ratings on ‘Chuck? Those rabid fans going crazy on the net didn’t come to church. ‘Chuck’s’ time had come.”

“Chuck’s” finale averaged 4.2 million viewers on Friday, while “30 Rock” grabbed 4.1 million in its timeslot Thursday.

Do you watch “30 Rock” regularly? Think the show should go on? Tell us on our Facebook page!

US files charges against Megaupload in ‘largest copyright case’

US prosecutors say that the video-sharing site Megaupload.com cost the US entertainment industry $500 million. Online activists worry the US case could stifle Internet freedoms around the world.

In New Zealand, police had to cut through an iron door of a safe room to get their fugitive, Kim Dotcom, the founder of an Internet-based video sharing site called Megaupload.com.

Mr. Dotcom (a German citizen born as Kim Schmitz), along with six of his colleagues, has been charged with criminal copyright infringement, racketeering, and money laundering.

Meanwhile, a worldwide network of hackers took up the battle on behalf of Megaupload.com, launching a massive denial-of-service attack on several entertainment websites, as well as on the US Department of Justice website.

The mayhem and legal proceedings are just the opening shots in what US prosecutors are calling the largest criminal copyright case ever, and involves $500 million in damages to the entertainment industry, as well as complex legal issues of what constitutes copyright infringement in the age of YouTube, Facebook ?liking,? and DVD burners. And the legal battle is likely to reverberate around the world, as countries contemplate their own laws over intellectual property rights.

If found guilty, Dotcom and his Megaupload associates ? who are thought to have earned up to $175 million by selling advertisements on their website ?could face 20 years in prison.

The Washington Post quoted Sen. Patrick Leahy ? author of the controversial Protect IP Act (PIPA) ? praising the arrest of Dotcom.

?Today?s action by the Department of Justice against the leaders of Megaupload.com shows what law enforcement can do to protect American intellectual property that is stolen through domestic Web sites,? the Post quoted Leahy saying.

The New York Times quoted?Ira P. Rothken, a lawyer for Megaupload, as saying in a Times phone interview, ?Megaupload believes the government is wrong on the facts, wrong on the law.?

China’s number of Web users rises to 513 million

(AP) ? The number of Internet users in China has surged past 500 million as millions of new Web surfers go online using mobile phones and tablet computers, an industry group reported Monday.

The popularity of the Internet in China has driven the explosive growth of profitable Web companies and made fortunes for some Chinese entrepreneurs despite government controls on what the public can see online.

The number of mainland Internet users rose to 513 million in December, up 12 percent from a year earlier, the government-sanctioned China Internet Network Information Center said.

Among them, the number who go online using handheld devices rose 17.5 percent over a year earlier to 356 million.

The popularity of wireless Internet was reflected Friday in a scramble by Chinese gadget fans and scalpers to buy Apple Inc.’s latest iPhone 4S, which sold out within hours of its China launch.

Angry customers shouted and threw eggs at Apple’s flagship Beijing outlet after the company failed to open the store, citing the size of the crowd. Apple postponed further iPhone 4S sales at its mainland stores for safety reasons but said they will be sold online and through its local carrier, China Unicom Ltd.

The communist government encourages Internet use for business and education but tries to block access to material it deems pornographic or subversive.

The governnment is strengthening its control over popular microblogs after a bullet train crash last July that killed 40 people prompted an online outpouring of criticism of the official response.

Microblog services have been ordered to monitor postings content more closely and remove objectionable material, while news media were barred from reporting online material without firsthand verification.

Despite such controls, popular online services such as portals Sina.com and Sohu.com, video websites Youku.com and Tudou.com and search engine Baidu report growing traffic and revenues.

Outlets owned by the ruling Communist Party or by the government also have jumped into the market, launching their own search engines and other services.

On Friday, regulators approved an initial public stock offering by the online arm of the ruling party newspaper People’s Daily, people.com, on the Shanghai Stock Exchange to raise 527 million yuan ($85 million).

Space ‘Superbubbles’ Could Spawn Energetic Cosmic Rays (SPACE.com)

Enigmatic cosmic rays that strike Earth with giant amounts of energy might come from hot gaseous “superbubbles” in space, a new study reveals.

Cosmic rays have perplexed scientists for a century. These electrically charged particles bombard Earth with energies dwarfing anything we are capable of, but their origins remain a mystery.

Since cosmic rays are electrically charged, they can get pushed and pulled around by interstellar magnetic fields in the gas between the stars as they zip through space, obscuring where they come from.

One suspected fountain of cosmic rays are star-forming regions. The massive stars within these stellar nurseries can spew out massive amounts of energy and explode as supernovas.

Now scientists may have pinpointed cosmic rays coming from a superbubble, one caused by powerful winds from clusters of young, massive stars punching into the surrounding molecular clouds of gas and dust.

The superbubble in question lies in the Cygnus X region of the sky, within the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. It was likely created by clusters of massive stars, such as the Cygnus OB2 association, a very large cluster about 4,500 light-years away. The cluster contains more than 500 stars, each more than 10 times the mass of our sun.

NASA’s Fermi Large Area Telescope detected a wide range of gamma rays ? the most energetic form of light ? emanating from a space about 160 light-years wide. The spectrum of gamma rays seen match those one would expect freshly generated cosmic rays to give off.

“For the first time, we have caught a glimpse of the early life of cosmic rays in these regions of massive star formation,” study co-author Luigi Tibaldo, an experimental physicist at Padova University and Italy’s National Institute of Nuclear Physics, told SPACE.com.

The gamma rays the researchers detected appear confined within this superbubble, which might suggest the cosmic rays creating them “seem trapped, as if they have a hard time getting out,” study co-author Isabelle Grenier, an astronomer and astrophysicist at Paris Diderot University in France, told SPACE.com.

“This might really change the way we think cosmic rays propagate, and if they’re giving off energy as they’re trapped inside star-forming regions, they may be changing the chemistry within, affecting how stars form,” Grenier said.

The scientists detailed their findings in the Nov. 25 issue of the journal Science.

Prison Planet.com ? Dr. Burzynski's Cancer Research Institute …

TheAlexJonesChannel
Friday, November 11, 2011

Mike Adams from NaturalNews.com, reporting for Infowars.com visits the Burzynski research institute and speaks with Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, founder of the research institute and clinic. Dr. Burzynski talks about how his invention of gene-targeted cancer medications called Antineoplastons has shown much greater success rates for ridding the body of cancer than any conventional method. Dr. Burzynski also explains that while his invention should be applauded by the medical industry as a whole, it actually made him a target of scrutiny and many indictments.
